Welcome aboard, sirs and ladies, misters and misses, and all those in between. Welcome aboard and please do enjoy your stay. You won’t be getting out of here any time soon. What’s that, you say? You’ll find a way off the train? But the world is the train. How can you leave the world behind?

You see, my friend, you’ve found the In Between. This is where all people who slip between the cracks end up. And not just from your world, either. The In Between is the link between everything and everyone. So you’ll find a melting pot of cultures and societies here.

Of course, you won’t last long if you don’t learn how things work here. The three Queens—the Explorer, the Caregiver and the Scientist—rule the train. And their followers are quick to pick up anyone who slips between the cracks. You see, they each have an idea about how to run things here—and their followers are usually at odds with one another because of it.

Now there are some outliers, of course. There are the Rail Runners—but don’t ask me exactly what they’re all about. They claim that they’re fighting against the “oppressive regime.” But really, when you think about it, we get along just fine here—if you ignore the occasional riot and murder.

Now you may wonder why the three Queens have been fighting for so long. Well, it all has to do with what happened to the Conductor. No one’s quite sure if he’s missing or dead or just doesn’t care—but the fact of the matter is that he’s no longer giving orders on the train, so his daughters are establishing order for him.

And before I go any further, I have to ask: Do you come from a world with magic? Aethers? Supernatural phenomena? I don’t right care what you call it. What I care about is that you don’t use it. See, the Motes power the train. And all that magic gets them riled up—so you need to store it properly. You don’t want Motes to turn into Grimelings; they’re nasty to deal with.

Want to get home? Well good luck. That’s what all of us are trying to do in one form or other. Me? I’m just a friendly face—as friendly as you’ll see around here. Now buckle up, boys and girls. You’re in for the ride of your life. And do remember: Please mind the gap.

Welcome to the In Between. Welcome to the Rails to Nowhere.
